With summer finally being here you might be planning on going on holiday at some point as I know I sure am! I'll be giving you a few tips on how to keep safe and 'Preventing Theft On Your Summer Holidays'.

Keep your valuables locked away - Most hotels and accommodation tend to have safes and you must put them to good use! Make sure that the safe is stuck to the wall or floor as it is much safer that way as no one can just come and carry it away. Keep any of your valuables you don't need on a day to day basis locked in there, things such as your passport, travel documents and your money, which brings me on to my next point.

Only take daily money out with you - Don't take your entire holiday budget out with you every day, try and come up with a budget and just carry what you need that day. I have been doing this in recent years and have certainly felt much safer, was I ever to have my bag stolen I'd know that I'd still have a stash of money hidden away. This actually happened recently to someone I work with, she had her bag by her feet while eating and when she went to get it, it was gone. She had 300 euros in there, her phone AND her bank cards. This again brings me to my next point.

Make sure your bag is secure - I tend to use backpacks a lot at home but while I'm out and about in the day on holiday I use smaller bags and/or my pockets to store my items as long as the pockets are either zipped or tight and deep (if that's even possible in female clothing!) A bag which can be worn more on your front is definitely safer as you can see it at all times and I also tend to keep my bag on my knee when I'm in a bar or cafe for that extra bit of security.

Leaving your accommodation each day - If you are on the ground floor and people can see straight into the room that you are staying in, then it is best to close your curtains before you go out for the day, this then makes it harder for someone to know whether you are in or not. This also means they won't be able to scout out any valuables you may have accidentally left lying around. It is also best to make sure all your doors and windows are locked before you leave.

Don't leave anything unattended at the beach - If you plan on having a beach day and you all want to go swimming then it is best not to go all at once as then your belongings won't be left unattended for anyone to take. What my boyfriend and I do when we go to the beach to swim is to make sure we only take our towels with us and leave everything in our room so that we don't have anything valuable to think about.

Social Media - If you are going on holiday and your house is going to be left empty while you away, then you probably shouldn't be advertising that you are on holiday on Facebook or any other social media site whether that be the dates you are going or any posts while you are there.

A couple of other tips I have are 1. Don't fall for any scams that may be waiting in the street to target you. There are many scams in all different places so it could be a good idea to read up about any that may be about in the area you are visiting before you go so you know what to look out for and what to avoid. 2. Only travel with official taxis. Many people will be about trying to scam travellers into paying higher, more expensive fares. Go to the official taxi ranks or call them/ask someone official.

6 Canary Island Festivals You Should Check Out

6 Canary Island Festivals You Should Check Out Banner with various festival photos.
*This post is sponsored by Holiday Gems. All opinions are my own.

I have been to various places in the Canary Islands many times before but I have never had the chance to check out any of their yearly festivals. Here is a list of the '6 Canary Island Festivals You Should Check Out' which I will definitely be looking into visiting myself. You can book these places through

The Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife is held every February for 15 days. It is the Capitals most iconic celebration which sees the streets filled with fancy dress, lots of music and tonnes of colour! It has loads of events including competitions, dancing and parades. If you plan on going, it is advised to book in advance because the area is in great demand at Carnival time.

A holy walk through a street.
Flowers creating an image.

Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday and is held in La Orotava in Tenerife. It is celebrated with folklore music and parades. For this holiday the streets and squares are closed so that they can be covered with colourful carpets made with various types of flowers and coloured sand. Then a religious parade pass over the carpets followed by a huge fiesta of traditional music and dance with everyone dressed in traditional clothes.

On the beach with various kites flying.

International Kite Flying Festival

The International Kite Flying Festival is exactly what it sounds like. It started in 1987 as a group of people who were passionate about flying kites and is now a huge recognised event. It is held in Corralejo in Tenerife each year. There is kite exhibitions, workshops and competitions.

Baile De Magos

Baile De Magos is a folklore street party with performances from many different groups. It is based in Tenerife and everyone wears traditional clothing and enjoys traditional music and cuisine. Mago means peasant or country people.

Fiesta Del Diablo

Fiesta Del Diablo means The Devil's Fiesta and is held every year on the 8th September in the early hours of the morning where people gather to dance on the streets of Tijarafe on La Palma island and wait for the devil to appear. Around 3am the standard carnival characters appear and then everyone starts singing something along the lines of  'tra-la-la-la, the devil's coming soon' until he appears amid a chaos of sparks, flames and fireworks.

Lots of people wearing white throwing talcum powder.

 Los Indianos

Los Indianos is actually part of The Carnaval Santa Cruz De Tenerife that I mentioned earlier in the post. The origins of this are from the Indianos (Indians) who returned from Latin Ameria with great wealth. The tradition has now become people wearing white and throwing talcum powder about while carrying briefcases around full of fake cash, which sounds like a whole lot of fun.

Have you ever been to any of these festivals? If so which and if not which one sounds the most interesting to you? Let me know in the comments below.

Top Signs That You REALLY Need A Holiday

Top Signs that you REALLY Need a Holiday Banner with a beach in the back.

*This is a contributed post. All opinions are the writers own.

At times, you may feel as though you are in desperate need of a holiday. You may also feel that no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to focus at work or even relax at home. This is completely normal, but it is a sign that you are ready for a vacation.

Feeling Negative

If you are constantly feeling bored, or if you just can’t seem to muster up the motivation to get your work done then this is a clear sign that a holiday is most certainly needed. At times, you may feel as though everything about your job annoys you, and that you don’t feel satisfied or even fulfilled when you finally get through your daily grind. As if that wasn’t enough, you may even find that this seeps into your personal life as well, causing you real problems along the way. A vacation can put an end to all of this, by giving you the break you need from reality while also helping you to refocus your priorities along the way.

Camera, Hat, Sunglasses & Drink

Physical Pain

Believe it or not, when you are stressed, anxious or even depressed, your brain releases stress hormones. This is known as being a fight or flight response, and if you have this constantly then this can really run you into the ground. You may even go on to experience physical symptoms as well. This can include a high blood pressure, an increased pulse rate, gastrointestinal problems, headaches and more. When you are constantly overworked or stressed, you may even find that you are way more susceptible to things like the cold virus, the flu and other related infections. If you want to combat all of this then the only way to get this done would be for you to try and stop the source of the stress. It’s important to know that it's not always work that causes this amount of stress, sometimes it can be your home life as well. Things like having a newborn baby, a child who is going through their big exams or anything else of the sort can put an enormous amount of stress and pressure on you, and by understanding these sources of stress, you can then start to deal with them more efficiently.

Lack of Sleep

Lack of sleep is another sign that you are seriously ready for a vacation. If you find it hard to get to sleep at night then this is due to the notorious stress hormone. Stress hormones make it incredibly difficult for you to unwind right before bedtime and this can lead you to feel wide awake even though you really should be tired. Studies show that a third of people do not get the recommended hours of sleep that they need every single night and that another third cannot actually fall asleep because they have far too much to think about. A vacation can give you that much-needed break and it can also help you to really take the time to catch up on those ZZZs.

As mentioned above, stress can cause you to have a fight or flight response. This can really affect your health and it can also give you tunnel vision. When you feel chronic stress, you may find it difficult to focus on other things. Your performance at work may start to suffer and you may even find It hard to focus on things like problem-solving as well. At the end of the day, people make mistakes and this is completely normal, but if you find that your mistakes are seriously interfering with your job then you may want to think about having a break before it starts to have a bigger impact on your performance.

Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms

If you are struggling with your stress levels then you may find that you reach for a glass of wine to try and relax, or even that you try and have a ton of junk food as soon as you get home from work. This shows that you are suffering from burnout and a lot of people go through this every single year. If you are suffering from burnout then this can lead you to make poor decisions and you may even find it hard to relax if you don’t succumb to your bad habits as well.

Feeling Constantly Emotional

Feeling constantly emotional is another sign that you seriously need to take a break. You may find that things affect you more than they usually would and you may even find that when something happens, you react in a way that just isn’t you. This is normal when you have been at the daily grind for far too long, and of course, taking a break is the best solution. A lot of people worry because they think that when they go on vacation, that they will be using up their holidays at work. They also feel that when they get back, that everything will go back to normal and they won’t feel any better at all. This really is not the case, and a vacation can work wonders for your mental health. Even a few days away can reverse all of the above signs and symptoms, not to mention that it can also help you to take the time you need to focus on yourself. If you do want to book a vacation so you can get away from the stress of your daily life then one thing that you can do is go on a river cruise. This will give you the time you need to unwind and it is about as stress-free as you can get. The main thing that you need to do here is to avoid booking a vacation like a sightseeing tour or a city break because all the rushing around to see the sights and even the city atmosphere won’t give you the time you need to unwind. The idea is that you need to get away from the chaos and the busy aspects of your life, so look for beach holidays, summer breaks and cruises.

A pair of classic Converse
My dad loves his pump style shoes and used to wear Converse a lot as they are such a classic casual shoe style especially in black and white.
