This is a contributed post. Finding it impossible to get a good night’s sleep? It’s no fun, is it? But you know what? You can turn things around and start sleeping soundly again with these seven practices.

1. Sack Off the Midnight Doom‑Scroll

Your pillow is not the office water‑cooler, so quit checking email after lights‑out. Park the phone on aeroplane mode across the room and give your circadian rhythm a fighting chance. Blue light trips the brain into thinking it is still lunchtime in Ibiza, and that is no help when you are trying to nod off.

2. Keep It Igloo‑Cool

A bedroom that feels like a sauna is the enemy of REM. Aim for about 18 °C, crack a window if the weather allows, and swap the heavy duvet for a lighter tog. If your partner turns into a human radiator, consider separate blankets. Romantic, no, but neither is elbowing each other at 3 a.m.

3. Ground Control to Major Snooze

Some folks swear by earthing products such as conductive sheets or mats that plug into a grounded outlet. The idea is that tiny electrons waltz up from the earth, dial down inflammation and encourage a calmer nervous system. Skeptical? Fair enough. Think of it as a quirky experiment that costs less than a full spa day and at least keeps the static out of your hair.

4. Caffeine Curfew After Lunch

Yes, coffee is life, but it sticks around in your bloodstream longer than that mate who never knows when to leave the pub. Switch to decaf or herbal tea after about 2 p.m. and save yourself the 1 a.m. wide‑eyed regret, while boosting your health. If withdrawal headaches loom, taper gradually rather than jumping straight to camomile.

5. Turn the Bedroom Into a Boring Oasis

Your sleep space should be about as exciting as a tax seminar. Banish half‑folded laundry, glowing gadgets and the treadmill you promised would become a morning routine. Minimal clutter equals minimal mental chatter. A quick tidy before brushing teeth sets the tone, and you will not stub your toe on forgotten trainers in the dark.

6. Pre‑Bed Brain Dump

If your mind races faster than a bargain hunter on Black Friday, keep a notebook by the bed. Spend five minutes scribbling tomorrow’s to‑dos, random anxieties or that genius idea for a sandwich shop shaped like a UFO. Once the thoughts are on paper, they stop auditioning in your head, leaving space for dreams rather than spreadsheets.

7. Rituals, Not Routines

Routines feel rigid, but a lilting bedtime ritual can be oddly luxurious. Dim the bedside lamp, play a mellow playlist, massage a dab of lavender oil onto temples and stretch the hamstrings you ignored all day. Repetition teaches the brain that these cues equal sleep. Eventually, your eyelids will droop on autopilot, like a Pavlovian pug awaiting snacks.

The Final Yawn

Improving sleep rarely requires an encyclopaedia of bio‑hacking tech. Tiny tweaks, layered gently, work wonders. Cut late‑night screens, chill the room, flirt with grounding gear, mind your caffeine, declutter, offload thoughts and embrace a comforting wind‑down sequence. Do it consistently and you will glide into slumber sooner than you can mutter, Where did I put that earthing mat.
