This is a contributed post. In the world of self-care, there are seven pillars. If you need a reset or want to prioritise your well-being a bit more today than yesterday, you can use these pillars to help you focus on taking care of yourself starting now.

Mental

Mental self-care involves everything related to your psychological well-being. Whether seeking counselling for a mental health concern or taking a vape to relax, your mindset matters to your overall health. To help you achieve better mental health, try journaling your feelings and experiences, practising yoga and meditation, or doing a puzzle to keep your mind sharp.

Physical

Physical self-care is about caring for your body to stay physically healthy and feel good in your skin. Look for activities such as exercise to keep you in shape and maintain your overall health. Pay attention to your diet and eat healthy while enjoying your favourite foods. Drinking plenty of water is important to stay hydrated. Try to get enough quality sleep each night to wake up refreshed the following day.

Spiritual

Spiritual self-care can encompass any religious beliefs you hold. Alternatively or additionally, spirituality can be about finding a deeper sense of meaning while connecting with the world around you. Volunteering and helping others while reinforcing your belief in a cause can help connect you to something greater than yourself to achieve spiritual well-being.

Environmental

Environmental self-care can deal with how clean or disorganised your home is and being out in the world. If your home is messy, you probably do not feel good about its current state. Set a timer and organise your home in small increments each day until finished. You will be happy with the results and feel a sense of relief and accomplishment. Once you are done, go somewhere. Be in nature and breathe in the fresh air, or go for a hike to experience something different.

Emotional

Emotional and mental self-care can sometimes feel interchangeable, but each deserves your focus. Emotional self-care includes doing things that make you feel good, such as journaling, watching a movie with all the feels, and setting intentions for yourself. Finding functional coping mechanisms to deal with life’s ups and downs will help you gain better emotional health.

Social

Social self-care is important to avoid loneliness while bringing enrichment to your life. Spending quality time with family and friends can bring meaning and purpose to how you live. Cultivate and nurture relationships with those from your past and new people you connect with. Whether you meet in person daily or monthly, the important thing is to maintain your connections with intention.

Recreational

Recreational self-care is just as important as any other pillar of your well-being. It incorporates playing games indoors, such as board games or video games, going outside for a quick footie match or racing your child in the rain. Engaging in hobbies, new or old, is also recreational. Find something fun to pursue or pick up where you left off learning the guitar in your younger years.
