AD – All homeowners want to save money and it is no surprise that home improvement projects are frequently on the top of their list. The following post will provide an overview of the most common types. It’s not always easy to tell what home improvements will save you money in the long run, but here are 6 ways to save money on home improvements:

Add Loft Insulation
Loft insulation is a simple and affordable way to save on your energy bills and reduce the impact of climate change. The loft space in your home is one of the most important spaces to insulate. Loft insulation will reduce heat loss, help avoid condensation and it will also stop draughts. It is easy to improve your home’s efficiency and save money by installing loft insulation.

Invest in Carpets
Carpets, whether new or old, can be a wise investment. Carpets can actually save you money in the long run because they prevent heat loss and make your home warmer in winter resulting in you using less energy to heat your home. You can also save money by installing the carpet yourself. Most carpets are easy to install and don’t require much time and effort to do.

Upgrade to a Smart Meter
Smart meters are a new kind of gas and electricity meter that are becoming very popular as of late. They automatically send your reading to your supplier which means you will be paying accurate amounts for how much energy you use. Smart meters have digital displays which tell you exactly how much you are spending where. To save money it could be a good idea to monitor certain areas in your home to see where you can cut down on your energy use and make an effort to use less energy in the future.

Install LED Light Bulbs
Another way to save money around your home is to change your lightbulbs to LED bulbs. While LED bulbs are slightly more expensive initially, they are actually more energy-efficient than incandescent light bulbs, and they last much longer. On average around 20,000 hours compared to 1000 hours from incandescent bulbs. If you want to go even better with bulbs, invest in a smart bulb such as a Phillips Hue light. These lights are easy to control from your mobile phone using an app and can be set using timers so no more leaving the light on when it’s not needed.

Get a Dishwasher
You may think that dishwashers use more water than hand-washing but that’s where you are wrong. The most efficient dishwashers use 10 times less water and even the least water-efficient dishwashers use around half the water that handwashing uses. The best dishwashers to invest in to save water and thus money is the full-size ones but if you don’t have the space, the slimline versions are still a very good investment. These results come from a Which? research study, if you are interested in reading more you can find the article here:

Take Plant Cuttings
For the last way to save money on home improvements, we have taking plant cuttings. Instead of buying new plants every time, why not take a cutting from existing plants you already have? While they won’t already be partly grown like plants you buy from garden centres, they will save you money in the long run as you will be creating a whole new plant from an already existing one. This is a slightly tricky thing to get right so be sure to do a lot of research before jumping into it yourself and before you know it, you’ll have a garden or home full of plants you have grown from scratch!
