Want to know my favourite way to wind down after a long day at work? Playing games. Whether that be console games, mobile games or even puzzle games (Sudoku, I’m looking at you), I love playing all different types. In today’s post, I’ll be talking through 5 game types that I love to play, so keep on reading below to find out what they are.
First-Person Shooters
First-person shooters will always be one of my favourite game types. There is just something fun about playing fast-paced quick rounds of shooters. Two of my favourites are Call of Duty and Overwatch. I have been playing Call of Duty for around 12 years now and like to dip in and out of it but it’s always one I find myself returning to often. It’s fairly easy to play and there aren’t really any stakes to it, so it’s good as a fun, stress reliever.
Overwatch is slightly different in that there are several different character types with different skills and you have to work as a team to win the objective. While still a first-person shooter, it’s got a lot more strategy to it when it comes to choosing certain characters for which map and which will be best to counter who the enemy team chooses. It’s a bright, colourful game and it’s super fun to play.
Role-Playing Games
Now when it comes to games, Role-playing games take the top spot. I am always drawn to games that include role-play. My favourites include Mass Effect, Skyrim, Borderlands as well as many others. While some of my favourite role-playing games may be classed as other types such as shooters (Borderlands) etc, they still may fall into this category. I just love being given a character and a world with a backstory and sent out to complete the story.
My favourite type of role-playing games are definitely open-world ones as they leave you to be free to play as you choose. I always try and complete as many side-quests as I can as well as the main story and I find myself talking to every NPC I see to check if they have quests available. The options are endless and you can spend many hours in these types of games.
Sudoku
I had to include Sudoku in this post and in its own category as it’s one of my favourite games to play. It includes a little more brain power than some of the others on the list but I absolutely love playing it. I was first taught this game by my cousin and later my granny and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s set up in a 9X9 grid and the object is to fill the grid with numbers 1-9 in each square. The only thing is that you can’t have the same number in a horizontal or vertical line, so it’s up to you to fit them in.
Each game starts with some numbers already placed so you can pick the difficulty – Easy means there are more numbers at the start and less the harder it gets. I do struggle with some of the harder puzzles but I am getting quicker at finishing games. I always take a Sudoku book on holiday with me and I have an app on my phone that I play it on too.
Idle Games
When it comes to mobile/browser games, one of my favourite genres to play is idle games. An idle game is described as a game that lets you progress while not actively playing. The more resources you have the more you can level up parts of your game and progress quicker. These can be earned through clicks or through waiting for your resources to increase and then get upgraded.
One of these I’m playing at the moment is AdVenture Ages which is a fun little mobile game. I also like to drop in and out of playing Idle Money Tree and Idle Coffee Business which I recently started playing. They are good to drop into now and again, check what resources I’ve earned and then start upgrading to earn more of them at a quicker pace.
Merge Games
Another type of mobile/browser game I love to play is Merge games. This could be a merge puzzle game with different puzzle levels to receive items to upgrade a scenario e.g. a garden, a person’s makeover, an island, a business or a house. There are so many different versions to choose from. This also includes classic merge-3 level games such as Candy Crush.
The other type of merge games I play is where you keep merging items on your board to level them up and create more advanced items. You can usually then trade these items for points/coins to upgrade your scenario. A couple of these I play are Taylor’s Secret and Travel Town.
Classic games like checkers online are also fun to play.
