*This is a contributed post. Everyone and their dog is looking for ways to make more money to support life and live comfortably in the face of rising costs. While some people and their dogs too have tapped into income sources to top up their earnings, others need to look for more unconventional methods of drumming up extra funds to boost their bank balance and stay afloat. Keep reading to find out 5 unconventional ways to make money.
Everyone is aware of all the “quick ways to make money” or side hustles that guarantee an income, but thinking outside the box can help you unlock some avenues that you might not have considered. And while they might not be instant money makers, they can get you a return on your efforts if you play the waiting game.
Compensation
These days, it seems like you can make a claim for pretty much anything. This is not to say you should be making fraudulent claims, such as exaggerating injuries from a car crash or claiming a break-in and theft to get a home insurance payout. But there are ways you can make genuine compensation claims if you know what to look for.
For example, if you had a car on HP prior to 2021, you might be entitled to make a claim for an unsuitable finance agreement that wasn’t taken out with you in mind simply to hit targets and bonuses. You can make HP Claims if you feel this might have happened to you. There might also be cases you can claim for mis-sold loans, credit cards, mortgages, or any other financial product. It’s worth getting your paperwork out and checking to see if you’re entitled to receive anything back.

Sell Your Hair
You can grow your hair and then sell it to companies that use human hair to make wigs. Payments can vary, and it can take a while to verify the quality of your hair. But you can expect payments from £15 for shorter hair up to £150.
Of course, this isn’t an instant money spinner. You can use all the images. It takes time to grow and care for your hair, and if it’s in good condition, it can be used for other purposes. However, if you have long hair and you’re getting it chopped anyway, it’s worth checking to see if you can sell it and make some money for something you were doing anyway.
Bonus tip for when it comes to selling things to make some extra money. If you are a mother and you have extra you don’t need, then you can sell formula. That’s definitely an unconventional way to make money you probably never thought of!
Flip Furniture/Upcycle
If you have a knack for DIY and an eye for creativity, you can join the legions of DIYers who upcycle or flip furniture to sell. Whether you restore items back to their original condition and bring them back to life or you completely overhaul and revamp them into something completely different, you can produce the goods to the highest standards.
It’s worth noting that this can be rather laborious and time-consuming, and you aren’t guaranteed to be able to sell anything. However, if you’re doing it anyway or want to try it out, it’s worth a shot to see what happens.

Life Modelling
Life modelling is typically carried out at adult colleges and involves the model sitting completely naked for artists to draw. It has been going on for many years in the UK and across the world and is excellent for those who aren’t shy about their bodies and are looking for simple ways to earn money without doing too much.
You must ensure that you work in a safe environment; most legitimate colleges can do this. Typically, you can expect to be paid around £20 per hour for your services.
Get Ill
Did you know there are medical studies in which you can get paid to get ill on purpose? After all, most of us get sick throughout the year anyway, so why not do it on your terms? The most common one is clinical studies for treating flu, meaning you need to head to flu camp to participate. Still, participants can expect to get generously compensated in three figures for their participation.
It’s worth noting that not all clinical studies pay the same or have the same entry requirements or testing criteria, and some might not even pay at all. But you can sign up and pick what you want to get involved in.
So there we go—five different and not exactly run-of-the-mill ideas for generating a bit of money. While not instant bank account boosters, if you are thinking long-term, these could be exactly what you need. So check those old financial agreements, try your hand at some upcycling, get sick and strip off to help you bring in the pounds and give you some extra spending power.
Bonus Tip:
