But now? It’s all changed. In a bid to make a name for itself on the global scene, Saudi Arabia has opened up its borders to travellers. Adventurers who make the journey will be rewarded with a welcoming nation, exceptional history, and some of the best natural scenery that this place has to offer.
Still, since this is a relatively new tourist destination, there are some things to keep in mind before you make your journey. We’ve put together a few tips that’ll help you make the most of your trip.
Don’t Worry About Applying for a Visa
Given that Saudi Arabia was closed off to tourists for so long, you’d imagine that you’d need to go through a long and complicated journey to get a visa for travel purposes. But that’s not the case.
There are two ways to get a visa for Saudi Arabia. You can apply for an e-visa online, or you can use the much more straightforward process of getting a Visa on Arrival. There’s no point applying for a digital visa, which actually costs more than just paying the visa fee when you land in Saudi Arabia. So, yes, you do need a visa if you’re visiting from the UK, but you can get one at the airport.
Travel At The Right Time
If you’re taking the time and effort to visit Saudi Arabia, then you’ll probably want to spend your time exploring all of the fascinating sights, rather than spending your days in your hotel room. If you visit during the summer months, however, then the latter is exactly what you’ll end up doing. It’s simply too hot to go outside. Your best bet for beating the heat is to visit between December and March. It’ll still be hot at that time, but you’ll cope.
Pack Sensibly
There are two reasons why you need to pack sensibly when visiting Saudi Arabia. The first is the heat; even if you’re visiting during the winter, you’ll likely have to contend with a few uncomfortably hot days. In those moments, dressing correctly can be a game-changer. The other reason is that Saudi Arabia is a traditional country, so, to be respectful, you should cover your shoulders and legs. If you’re a man, take a look at thobes; if you’re a woman, then consider buying an abaya. Both options are stylish, comfortable, and culturally appropriate.
Prepare to Leave the Cities
Saudi Arabia’s cities are great, but if you’re visiting, you absolutely must rent a car and explore the country’s stunning natural landscapes. Mada’in Saleh, which is from the same civilisation that built Petra, is a must-visit. The Tabuk region, near Jordan, is an excellent place to explore on foot, too. Drive out there, put on your best hiking shoes, and go hiking with a guide.
