*Contributed post. The more self-empowered we feel, the more able we are to go out into the world and achieve something. Empowerment means that you are in control of your life, have more confidence, are strong and independent. It does not mean that you feel entitled, and any negative connotations are implied with that. It is the opposite of feeling helpless. It means you have a strong belief in yourself that you can make a difference in your life and the lives of the people you care about. There are many ways we can build a better sense of self-empowerment, and all it takes are a few changes to your current lifestyle to start seeing some positive results:

Start Taking Action

Everyone has things that bother them in their lives. While some people put up others try and resolve these issues. If you fall into the former category, perhaps it is time you start trying to resolve these issues. If you need to have a conversation with your manager at work, ensure you do it. After all, in a survey by Development Academy, over half (55%) of people say they’ve missed work opportunities by not being assertive enough. If someone has done something to upset or offend you, speak out. You do not need to be taken advantage of. Don’t be a people pleaser either, do not say yes to everyone who asks for a small favour, say no, and have more time for yourself. Most people do not have enough time in the day as it is, so it is not rude to say no. You are simply making time for yourself.

Concentrate on Your Health

One great way to feel more empowered is to start looking after your health. Quit the things you know you should like smoking or drinking too much and start developing better habits. Why not walk or cycle to the convenience store sometimes, or at least park a little further away. Maybe start swimming or jogging. The more exercise you can include, the better you will feel. Exercise is a natural mood enhancer and stress buster, plus it gives you more energy which may make a huge difference at work, especially if you want to progress. Additionally, don’t go to those drive thoughts anymore. Start eating healthier alternatives. Every small thing you do to improve your health will make you look and feel a lot more confident.

Control your Spending

If you want to have more control over your life, you should start with your wallet. Being in debt and having no control over it can rebound in so many ways. You feel more stressed, as if you are incapable of doing anything, you may eat more and put on weight, you might start snapping at people unnecessarily, and you may feel like crying all the time. It does not matter what the situation is right now, what matters is how you manage it. Be honest and take a look at your finances. Understanding exactly where you are is the first step to sorting it out. Think about learning how to live within your means, that does not mean you have to give up all the things you love, but you need to develop better financial skills.

Create Some Goals

When you are looking to develop a better sense of control and empowerment, you should create some goals. Although you will have some huge overarching goals, the best way to achieve them is to break them down into incremental and manageable sections. Having a lot of small goals you can tick off is far better than having massive unachievable goals, which inevitably put you off. If you want to run a marathon but have not put a running shoe on for years, that is an unachievable goal. Instead, create incremental distances, say the first 1km, then 2km, etc. Or maybe you want to wear that Dolce & Gabbana for Men, or buy it for your boyfriend, well why not save some money each month until you can afford it. The more items you can tick off, the better and more able you will feel.

Declutter

Is your home a little on the cluttered side? Well, if you want to feel more control and empowered, you should try taking control of the clutter in your home. A cluttered space has so many negative mental health side effects from increasing stress and anxiety to insomnia as well as making it far more difficult to find anything in the house. Decluttering gives you control over your physical, which in turn helps you take control over your mind. It offers you a sense of calm and peace too, which is why it is regarded as a Zen habit.
