Digital health has transformed the way we access care, manage chronic conditions, and understand our own bodies. But progress has its price. And that price? It’s privacy.

We’re Tracking Everything. Sometimes Too Much.
From smartwatches logging heart rates to apps monitoring mood swings, we’re generating oceans of personal data. The convenience is undeniable. A mother managing her child’s epilepsy can now receive seizure alerts in real-time. A diabetic patient can adjust insulin based on continuous glucose monitoring without setting foot in a clinic.
But here’s the rub: Where does that data go? Who sees it? Who owns it?
These aren’t hypothetical concerns. They’re happening in real time. Insurance companies are becoming tech companies. Tech companies are becoming healthcare providers. Somewhere in between, your sensitive health data is changing hands. Not once. Not twice. Often, without your knowledge.
Consent Isn’t Always What It Looks Like
We’ve all seen it. The long-winded privacy policy. The checkbox you can’t uncheck if you want to use the app. We click “Agree” because we have to. Not because we understand.
Digital health platforms often claim to operate with “informed consent.” But if the average user can’t comprehend the legal jargon, how informed is it, really?
Worse still, some platforms bundle your data with advertising services or share it with third parties that operate in the shadows. It’s one thing for a GP to access your records to adjust treatment. It’s another when a third-party marketing firm knows you’ve been searching for depression treatment at 2 am.

Support Systems Are Changing—And Not Always for the Better
Technology is replacing bedside conversations with chatbots and automated triage systems. Efficiency? Sure. But we must ask: what’s being lost?
Real human connection still matters, especially in high-stakes moments like end-of-life care, mental health crises, or legal battles. In these cases, digital data may be helpful, but not enough. Families often need professional guidance, for example, the support from registered nurses in legal cases will be unparalleled to any AI-driven app, to navigate complex systems when care goes wrong or records are mishandled. That kind of expertise can’t be automated. Nor should it be.
False Security Is Dangerous
The appearance of control is not control. Encrypted messages and PIN-locked portals offer a sense of safety. But breaches still happen. In 2023 alone, dozens of health tech platforms reported data leaks. One major provider exposed records, including mental health notes, appointment histories, and private messages.
Even anonymised data isn’t immune. Machine learning models can cross-reference information and re-identify individuals with eerie precision. You think you’re just a user ID. But you’re not. You’re you—your story, your patterns, your life.

The Human Cost of a Glitch
No system is perfect. We know this. However, in healthcare, even a small mistake can have heavy consequences. Imagine a mother relying on an app to track fetal movements—only for the algorithm to fail. Or a mental health app suggesting “you’re fine” when someone is quietly planning to harm themselves.
Digital tools should augment care. Not to replace clinical intuition. Don’t silence the gut feeling that something isn’t right. Yet, in the name of speed and scale, that’s where we’re headed.
Moving Forward, Eyes Open
We don’t need to abandon digital health. It’s not about throwing out the tech. It’s about demanding more from it. We need transparency over data practices, not platitudes. We need tighter accountability, not more terms and conditions. And we need to remember that health is human first, digital second.
There’s a lot of promise in the digital revolution. But we must stop mistaking access for safety, efficiency for accuracy and progress for wisdom. We have the tools. Now we need the ethics to match.
