This is a contributed post. As you get older, you tend to drop any hobbies or creative activities and instead, indulge all your time in work and family obligations. However, getting yourself a new hobby is an excellent way to switch off from the hustle and bustle of life, develop new skills, make new friends and just develop a whole lease of life.
Not only do you have the challenge of time, but also the difficulty in choosing what to do. There are so many to choose from, it can be difficult to know what might resonate with you.
To help you, you may first consider what time you have available, as well as what activities you have liked in the past and/or have always wanted to try. You should consider your energy levels too. If you have a very active and demanding job, something softer and creative might suit you better. If you sit at a desk all day, you may want to choose something more active to support your physical and mental well-being.
You can make a list and start to do some research for groups in your local area, or what equipment you might need to set yourself up at home to get started.
If you are stuck on ideas, here is a list of soft and active hobbies that you may wish to consider. Remember, you can always experiment with a few to see which ones you like before you make a long-term commitment!
Soft hobbies
Soft hobbies are those that are slower and use less mental and physical energy to complete. Many of these can be done alone quietly at home, but if you prefer to get out of the house, you can find a local group or hook up with friends to do together.

Knitting
Knitting is an excellent way to reduce stress and express yourself creatively. People have also said that once you have got the skills, it can become quite a meditative practice. All you need is some coloured yarn and a knitting needle, so the investment is very low!
Board games
Board games can increase cognitive and social interaction skills, as well as help you bring together friends and family. The quality time playing board games is extremely valuable and could be something you do regularly. There are thousands of games to choose from, which you can pick up from your local town or find very cheaply in charity shops.
Painting
Painting is a great hobby that enables self-expression without any rules or boundaries. You can simply grab some paper and colours and see what comes out. Alternatively, you can learn a specific painting skill and paint items, animals, people or landscapes. Painting can support your mood, concentration and self-esteem. It is also very satisfying to see what you can create.

Pottery
Pottery is a beautiful way to connect to your local community. You are able to meet like-minded people in a calming environment while creating something unique.
Active hobbies
Active hobbies get your heart pumping, blood flowing, and increase your happy hormones. Similarly to soft hobbies, many of these can be done alone or in groups. They are excellent if you need to incorporate more movement into your life in a fun way.
Cycling
Cycling isn’t just for commuting, it can also be a fun hobby and an excellent form of exercise. You can grab a push bike, an electric bike or a mountain bike, and explore your surroundings. You can go alone or with friends, at the same time as getting fit. Make sure you obtain E-bike insurance if you opt for the electric version, as the rules are slightly different than a traditional push bike.
Hiking
Hiking has become an extremely popular hobby, and there is a good reason for it. It not only offers significant mental and physical benefits, but it also enables you to connect with nature, enjoy the outdoors and see the more breathtaking views. Do some research to see what local walks you can find, and then you can head further afield as you build up your hobby and go to the mountains and lakes.

Paddleboarding
Paddleboarding enables you to get out onto the water without the large investment of a boat. You can head to your local lake or seafront, or use it as an excuse to travel to scenic locations. Paddleboarding is great fun, especially as you learn the skills needed to spend more time on the water.
Hobbies aren’t just for kids. You should make some time to find one for yourself and try something new!
